The key to getting the most from the gym is to work with of our gym team who will help you develop a fitness programme that suits you and meets your individual fitness goals. The fist step in doing this is to arrange to be taken through a personal fitness check. Based on this they will draw up a programme that is unique to you. They will then guide you through it, showing you how to warm up, stretch, use the equipment and carry out any relevant floor exercises before cooling down and stretching again to complete your workout.

Getting the most from your assessment

* The fitness assessment will take 30 minutes and must be booked in advanced

* Fill out a screening form before taking the assessment.

* Avoid taking any strenuous exercise within 2 hours of your assessment.

* Avoid eating a heavy meal up to 2 hours before your assessment.

* Avoid taking alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, drugs or medication within 45 minutes of the test

* Proper gym attire, including supportive footwear must be worn.

    Fitness Terms Explained
    The prospect of getting fit can be daunting enough without having to deal with all those gym terms and words that are freely bantered about. Every month we hope to explain the meaning of some of the most commonly used ones so exercise is not a foreign language and you can also impress others with your bilingual abilities.

    AEROBICS — Activity in which the body is able to supply adequate oxygen to the working muscles, for a period of time. These are activities that increase your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time such as running or cycling. Aerobic or endurance exercise is great for burning fat and strengthening your heart and lungs.

    “ABS” — or Abdominals. The collective name for the muscles on the front of the torso, below the chest.

    BARBELL – Weights attached to a long bar which requires both hands to pick up.

    BODY FAT – The percentage of your body mass that is not composed of lean muscle, water, bones or vital organs.

    BURNOUT – State of being bored or tired with exercise, frequently the result of overtraining or unvaried workouts. Cross-training and rest are good remedies for burnout.

    BABS— She who is to be obeyed

    CARDIOVASULAR— Physical conditioning that strengthens heart and blood vessels, the result of which is an increase in the ability for your body muscles to utilize fuel more effectively resulting in a greater level of exercising.

    COOL DOWN – Slowing down at the end of a workout to allow your body temperature and heart rate to decrease gradually. This process is as important as the work out itself.
    CROSS TRAINING – Mixing different activities into your regular workout routine to avoid overuse injuries and to prevent boredom. Cycling, running and swimming are 3 common activities used to cross-train different muscle groups.
